Trolling and You: A Handy Guide To Not Failing. posted Apr 16th 2009, 4:22AM
Mood: CarefreeMusic: Baz Luhrmann - The Sunscreen Song
Sheezy, like everywhere else has our favorite internet antagonists lovingly dubbed "trolls". To avoid looking like a total idiot when one does so happen to grace you with their presence allow me to give some handy advice.

Don't become an Anti-Troll: An anti-troll is a person who thinks they can give their tormentors a taste of their own medicine. These delusional individuals like to think that by targeting a group or individual using their own techniques right back at them. Trolling a troll, especially on their home turf, is a pointless endeavor. One described it as "pissing in an ocean of piss". Don't bother, you're wasting your time.

Avoid getting emotional: That's partially why they have come to your site in the first place. To illicit an emotional response out of you. If someone does something to make you angry remember this;

It's only the internet.

Seriously. Don't take it seriously. Don't even take it personally. They don't. Why should you? The more reaction you give, the more they'll attack.

"Don't feed the troll": That means ignore them. Don't comment on their behavior. Don't try to fling insults. Don't try to make a stand or a statement about them, keep it all to yourself and keep your commentary among your friends private. Anything you say or do can be used against you on the internet. Let me repeat that.

Anything you say or do can and will be used against you on the internet.

Just because they don't agree with you does not make them a troll: The internet isn't a sparkle fairy princess land full of love and acceptance. You WILL find people who do not share the same view point. These people might even be compelled to point that out rather bluntly -such as myself- that they think you are wrong. Some one will always be wrong on the internet, that does not make them a troll. That follows through to the next segment;

Don't fling the term Troll around: It's stupid, just don't. Not everyone's a troll. It's like crying "racist" because someone didn't vote for Obama. It'll make you look painfully retarded.

For additional advice watch this youtube video, it does a good job
